Call of Duty Warzone doesn't require PlayStation Plus

Call of Duty Warzone does not require a PlayStation Plus subscription.

This means the free-to-play battle royale online multiplayer can be experienced without any cost. Those who already have a PlayStation Plus subscription will benefit from a free Warzone Combat Pack, a cosmetic pack that will be exclusive to the PlayStation ecosystem until October 1.

Call of Duty Warzone is available on PS4, Xbox One and Windows PC. Warzone can be downloaded as a standalone or as a content update for Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

I was under the impression that every online video game involving the PlayStation Network required a PlayStation Plus subscription. What reason do they have for doing this? I wish the PlayStation Network was free like the old days, but I figured that's no longer possible in this day and age. There's way too much money in it. Anyways, I will most likely be a PlayStation Plus subscriber until the end of time, so I guess this doesn't matter a whole lot to me.
