Ah, the simple card game. Whether you’ve got 20 minutes to kill or want a relaxed game that can be enjoyed by a group of people across all ages doesn’t matter. Playing cards is an incredible activity that can bring a lot of fun.

Many old games, especially video games, become confined to the archives after a few years. However, several card games offer a timeless appeal that can be enjoyed with a physical deck or via a computerized version. Here are some of the best.

Solitaire

With hundreds of millions of games played daily around the world, Solitaire remains one of the most popular games on the planet. Anyone who has ever had a Microsoft computer will have played at some time, not least because a game should only last a few minutes. Even if you use a physical deck, the game can be set up very quickly.

It can be played solo, only requires one standard deck, is great for working on your logic, and is highly addictive. There are also several variants, meaning you’ll never get bored.

Blackjack

When looking for a fast-paced game that can be enjoyed by virtually anybody, blackjack is the answer. It has been popular in casinos since at least the early 18th century. You can play it online for fun or money while there are also plenty of live casinos where you play against a real dealer. Or to play with a physical deck, you only need two players.

The aim is simple: get as close as you can to 21 by adding your cards together (face cards are 10, aces are 1 or 11). If the player beats the dealer’s score, they win.

Go Fish

Go Fish is aimed primarily at younger players, but it can be enjoyed by older players too. It can be played with a standard deck or with a dedicated fun deck that features different fish. This makes it even more accessible to younger players as they don’t have to count. Even as adults, though, there are tactics involved, which make it a great source of relaxed fun.

The game only lasts 5-15 minutes, making it a great option when you don’t have hours to play. Moreover, it can be played by 2-10 players, making it a very versatile solution.

Uno

While video games offer a great form of escapism, card games can take it to the next level. Not least when playing with a group of friends. Uno has been enjoyed by players of all ages for over half a century. Frankly, its popularity today is arguably greater than ever. Not least because it can be played online via apps, consoles, and web browsers.

It’s one of the most fast-paced and exhilarating games ever created. While it’s best with four players, it is suitable for 2-8 players at a time.

Texas Hold ‘Em

Poker comes in many variants but Texas Hold’Em is the one that most friendship groups will play. It’s easy to pick up but very difficult to master. It can be played by as little as 2 people but usually works best with 4-8 players. A set of chips will improve the atmosphere but you can also play with matchsticks. For money or fun, the game is simply incredible.

Online poker platforms have come a long way too, allowing you to create an avatar and throw yourself into a truly immersive experience. It’s a modern twist on a classic game.
