XCOM: Chimera Squad test: GPU as well as CPU benchmarks and frame times

The following graphics card benchmarks were performed on an AMD Ryzen 9 3900X, which is operated with the standard settings and can access a total of 32 gigabytes of RAM with a speed of DDR4-3200 (14-14-14-32). "Windows 10 November 2019 Update" (1909) including all currently available patches is installed. The adrenaline 20.4.2 and the GeForce 442.87 were used as drivers . Both are not officially optimized for XCOM: Chimera Squad.

Test sequence and settings
Creating benchmarks from a turn strategy game is never optimal. Because in such games there is usually hardly any movement and at most one character runs across the screen while the others stand still. There are significantly more demanding actions in the shot sequences, but these are hardly reproducible. Accordingly, the benchmark only shows a “still picture” without any action, but which nevertheless takes place in a place that is as demanding as possible.

The maximum preset and thus the highest possible graphic details are used for 1,920 × 1,080, 2,560 × 1,440 and 3,840 × 2,160.

Benchmarks in Full HD, WQHD and Ultra HD
Nvidia graphics cards consistently perform significantly better than the AMD counterparts in XCOM: Chimera Squad. This is evident in all price ranges and all generations. In the GeForce warehouse, both the old Pascal and the current Turing generation do very well. The GeForce GTX 1080 has the Radeon RX Vega 64 clearly under control and delivers 16 percent more FPS and 7 percent better frame times in 2,560 × 1,440. In AAA games, there is usually a tie between the two graphics cards. It looks the same with the old middle class. The GeForce GTX 1060 is 1,920 × 1,080 21 percent faster than the Radeon RX 580 and 13 percent faster than the Radeon RX 590, while the latter is usually well ahead.

The current generation is no different. The GeForce RTX 2070 Super plays with the Radeon RX 5700 XT and delivers 30 percent more FPS and 16 percent better frame times in WQHD. The Turing model is also in the front in the AAA cut, but then by a significantly lower 11 percent. It is no different in the current entry-level class. The GeForce GTX 1650 Super is 11 percent faster than the Radeon RX 5500 XT at frame rate. Only in the frame times is the Radeon 2 percent ahead. This shows that AMD has significantly fewer problems with frame times than with frame rate, but without getting to the usual level.

A better GPU architecture does nothing in Chimera Squad
If you compare the generations with each other, it shows that Pascal scores better than the AAA game average compared to Turing. In XCOM: Chimera Squad, the GeForce RTX 2070 Super is 29 percent faster than the GeForce GTX 1080; in AAA games, it's usually 36 percent. It is not surprising that a quasi-ancient engine cannot benefit from the better Turing architecture. It looks the same at AMD. The Radeon RX 5700 XT is 14 percent faster than the Radeon RX Vega 64 in the round strategy game, while the AAA average is 22 percent. However, the poor performance of the Polaris generation is striking. The Radeon RX 580 and Radeon RX 590 are not only lagging behind the Radeon RX 5500 XT, the distance to the Radeon RX Vega 64 with the Vega architecture of the same name is also greater than usual.Apparently Vega does something better than Polaris, which ensures a good performance boost in the spin-off.


A lot of memory bandwidth obviously helps a lot
XCOM: Chimera Squad does not respond well to a better GPU architecture, but apparently already to a higher memory bandwidth. Because all graphics cards with a high memory bandwidth do well, which applies to both AMD and Nvidia. For example, the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti is 3840 × 2,160 39 percent faster than the GeForce GTX 1080, which is more than normal (+32 percent), so that the Pascal model is only slightly behind the GeForce RTX 2080 Super, which is what it actually is not succeed. The GeForce RTX 2080 Ti Super is 28 percent ahead of the GeForce RTX 2080 Super, with an average of 22 percent. And the Radeon VII is 47 percent faster than the Radeon RX Vega 64, but the AAA average is just 27 percent. But it fits,that the Radeon VII is a memory exotic and offers more than twice as much memory bandwidth as the smaller model.

The frame times also have a winner and a loser
AMD has problems with the frame rate, but with the frame times Nvidia. The GeForce GTX 1080 occasionally shows small to medium-sized irregularities in the frame output. The GeForce RTX 2070 Super meanwhile has more uniform frame times, but a few larger outliers. Both types of behavior are reproducible. As a turn strategy game in XCOM: Chimera Squad, this has no practical effects, but it shows that the game generally still has a few performance problems - or simply that the Unreal Engine 3.5 is a lot, but not modern anymore.


AMD shows that it can also be done better. The Radeon RX Vega 64 already shows good frame times. There are almost always small fluctuations, but they are really only small and also very regular. The Radeon RX 5700 XT based on the RDNA architecture then offers absolutely perfect frame times. There is not a single, small outlier in the test sequence, something like this is rarely seen.

CPU benchmarks show interesting results
It's hard to believe, but the editors reviewed it several times - always with the same result. By far the fastest processors in XCOM: Chimera Squad are all offshoots of AMD's current Zen 2 generation. That in itself would not be so surprising, since Zen 2 is sometimes ahead of the Intel derivatives even in games. So far, however, there has never been such a huge lead as in the new turn strategy game.

The Ryzen 9 3900X in Full HD on a GeForce RTX 2080 Ti FE delivers 28 percent more FPS and 29 percent better frame times than a Core i9-9900K. Since the Ryzen 5 3600 is almost as fast, AMD's mid-range model also places itself ahead of Intel's consumer flagship.

But not only Zen 2, the Ryzen offshoots generally do well. The Ryzen 5 2600X is a decent 21 and 28 percent slower than the Ryzen 5 3600, but the gap to the Core i9-9900K is only 2 and 9 percent, while the Core i7-7700K is narrowly beaten. It has a 3 percent lower frame rate and 14 percent worse frame times than its bigger brother.


The Ryzen 5 1600X is then 11 and 6 percent inferior to the successor model. This makes the processor as fast as the Core i3-9100, only with the frame times there is still an advantage of 8 percent.

Four cores without SMT are completely sufficient
As interesting and unusual the results are, for XCOM: Chimera Squad, any reasonably fast processor with four cores is sufficient - even without SMT. Faster processors increase the frame rate, but this simply has no advantages in a turn strategy game. With more than four cores including SMT, the game can't do anything anyway, even 8 threads have only minimal benefit.
