Why does Mortal Kombat use K?

Steve Ritchie, a pinball designer, came up with the name Mortal Kombat after having trouble trademarking the earlier name, Mortal Combat. Since then, the series often misspells numerous nouns by substituting the letter "K" for the harsh C sound in lieu of the letter "C".
