In 1982, the first RPGs were published in Japan. The first was Underground Exploration by Koei, which was made available in March 1982. Pony Canyon's Spy Daisakusen, which was released in April 1982 and was based on the Mission: Impossible film series, came next; it did away with the usual fantasy backdrop in favour of a contemporary espionage scenario.

What's your favorite JRPG?

Xenoblade Chronicles is the first game that comes to mind that's easily playable on either the Switch or PC. It's my personal favourite RPG of the 7th gen and blew me away when I first played it in 2011.

Many people are recommending Suikoden 2, which is easily one of the best RPGs ever made, but IIRC it's only available on PSX, PSN (PSP, PS3, and Vita), and a Japan only PSP port.
