Tower of God
What is Tower of God?

Tower of God is a South Korean web manwha written and illustrated by S.I.U. The series started in 2010 and started to receive an official translation in English on the website Webtoons. The series is mostly completely free to read with new chapters coming every Monday.

Tower of God centers around a boy called Twenty-Fifth Bam, who has spent most of his life trapped beneath a vast and mysterious Tower, with only his close friend, Rachel, to keep him company. When Rachel enters the Tower, Bam manages to open the door into it as well, and faces challenges at each floor of this tower as he tries to find his closest companion.

As the story progresses, the reader gradually explores the lore, history, and motivations of important characters and factions that drive or try to change the fate of the tower, for more than 10,000 years. Mysteries are gradually unveiled and added, as the readers learn about the struggles and triumphs of the inhabitants of the tower.

Setting

What is the Tower?

The Tower is the setting for the whole series. In order to gain access to the next floor you must first pass a test given by a Test Administrator. These tests can be a wide variety of things, everything from a battle royale, a game of capture the flag, or even a game of catch... it's basically up to the Administrator to choose.
"So each floor is just a test?"
Haha, no. Each floor can be incredibly expansive and end up developing it's own culture. Many of the floors end up developing cities where those climbing the Tower may end up living but pretty much anything goes on what could be on a floor. It could be a bustling city, a large ocean, or a desolate wasteland devoid of life. The Tower is the sole setting but each floor may change up the setting.

Powers and Fighting

Shinsu is the lifeblood of the Tower. It permeates everything in higher concentrations as you go up the Tower and it is used by those trying to climb the Tower. Since most people going up the Tower do so in teams, 5 positions were created to describe how various people use Shinsu.

  • Fisherman
The main offense of the battle, Fishermen are to dash into the heart of the enemy force and decimate their forces, usually through physical attacks.
  • Spear Bearer
Spear Bearers act like snipers for the team, throwing their spears with deadly accuracy, but they can also serve a purpose similar to the Fisherman's by using their spear like a staff for close-combat. Technically speaking, they take all long-range matters into their own hands.
  • Scout
Scouts will usually run ahead and investigate enemy forces for info, then return and deliver the information to the Light Bearers. They also help the Fishermen with offense.
  • Light Bearer
Light Bearers store and deliver knowledge to their team-mates while guiding them with the light of their Lighthouse.
  • Wave Controller
Wave Controllers are the directors of the battle, aiding their comrades by healing their wounds, annihilating enemy forces or subtly changing the tide of the battle, all through the use of Shinsu. There are many variations of this Position.

Each position can be filled as needed in a team though those in the Tower usually have a specialization. The fights can be very tactical between teams or it could basically be DBZ with who can send the bigger burst of energy at the other person. There is some variety in how fights play out but as people get stronger it starts to lean in to the later rather than the former.

Why should you read Tower of God?
Tower of God is a large fantasy epic with a world to back that up. The history of the world feels incredibly well developed and almost feels like a mystery that you slowly get more and more enticing info about. If you like well thought out and planned worlds where discovering more about it seems enticing, ToG might be for you. The characters help support the story and there are a lot of characters. Let me restate that, there are A LOT of characters. This series has an incredibly large ensemble cast all with their own motivations and goals who start to weave in and out of the story as needed. It feels like there are very few "only relevant for an arc" characters cause many of the characters are going up the Tower as well. Obviously some characters get more focus than others but the series is very comfortable in adding in new ones consistently and giving them proper attention and setting up many of them as it goes on. This is a world worth digging into and is full of characters that make that world feel alive.
