PlateStation, a company offering third-party customisable PS5 faceplates, has shut down after reported legal action from Sony.
A representative from the site said that it did its “due diligence” and believed it could sell its wares as Sony “only had pending patents on the faceplates”.
The rep continued:
But then Sony’s lawyers told us it was their opinion, Sony’s intellectual property extended to the faceplates, and that if we continued to sell and distribute them in any country, we would end up in court.
This all came to light yesterday and we are now cancelling and refunding all faceplate orders worldwide… we are extremely disappointed about this but we have no other option.
Those who have ordered custom faceplates from the company should have an email detailing a refund.
While Sony’s recent teardown video shows off easily removable faceplates, it’s yet to offer customisable additions beyond the standard white ones that come with the console.
PS5 heads to retail stores on 12 November.
