Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan said the town will reopen its beaches to the general public this Saturday, telling reporters Tuesday that he doesn’t believe the action will violate Gov. Larry Hogan’s executive order allowing for essential travel only.

Meehan said during a press conference with reporters Tuesday that the town’s police force will not be directed to look for out-of-town residents and that he doesn’t believe it’s in violation of the governor’s order “because we are not asking anyone to supersede the travel restrictions that are in place.”

“There will be no police officers patrolling for license plates,” Meehan said. “That’s not going to be the case here in Ocean City.”

When news first broke of the announcement Monday evening, Mike Ricci, spokesman for Gov. Hogan, said if people were driving to walk the beaches or boardwalk from outside Ocean City, it would violate the governor’s orders, which currently allows for only essential travel.

Meehan repeatedly denied that the resolution passed by city council Monday to reopen the beaches this weekend violates that order, saying “we support the governor’s recovery program. We’re trying to work cohesively with that.”

“We encourage people to follow the governor’s stay-at-home orders,” Meehan said.

City Council Secretary Mary Knight told The Sun Monday evening Meehan announced the decision during Monday’s 6 p.m. meeting. Knight said all seven council members supported the move.
