Microsoft reduces price of Xbox Series S in Japan

Microsoft has already reduced the price of the Xbox Series S in Japan, putting the Series S in line with pricing for the Nintendo Switch.

Xbox Series S was originally planned for ¥32,980 plus tax, but will now retail for ¥29,980 yen plus tax. This is in contrast to the price of the Xbox Series X and PS5 (with optical disc drive), both set at ¥49,980 yen.

Microsoft has not declared why the sudden price reduction of the Series S, but we can take a guess and say it was to make the console more appealing when up against the Switch itself. Xbox has a relatively low market share in Japan, so a cheaper console might be the first step in Microsoft actively taking steps to try to correct that.

Xbox Series X and Series S head to retail stores on November 10, followed by the PS5 on November 12. The Switch is available now.
