How to Temporarily Fix Stick Drift on Your PS5 Controller

Stick drift is a common issue many PS5 controller users experience. While a permanent fix often requires disassembling the controller, there are some quick, temporary solutions you can try at home without taking it apart. In this post, we’ll walk you through a simple method to address the problem of stick drift, allowing you to get back to your game without too much hassle.

Step 1: Rotate the Analog Sticks

The first method involves rotating the analog sticks to dislodge any dirt or debris causing the drift. Here’s what to do:

  1. Grab your PS5 controller.
  2. Start by rotating the analog sticks counterclockwise at least three full turns. Make sure the sticks go all the way to the edge.
  3. Once you’ve done this, switch directions and rotate the sticks clockwise.

The purpose of this rotation is to try and move any dirt or debris lodged in the controller, which may be affecting the analog sticks' performance. While this is a temporary fix, it can improve the situation if dust or debris is the cause.

Step 2: Push Down and Rotate

Next, you’ll add pressure to the analog sticks while rotating them. Follow these steps:

  1. Press down on the analog sticks and rotate them counterclockwise again, just like before. This helps move any dirt or debris further down into the controller.
  2. After a few rotations, switch directions and rotate them clockwise while still pressing down.

By pushing down on the analog sticks, you may be able to clear out more stubborn debris that’s affecting their movement.

Step 3: Blow into the Controller

For an extra step, you can try gently pulling up on the analog sticks and blowing into the space created. This works similarly to how people used to blow into N64 cartridges to remove dirt. By blowing into the controller, you may be able to clear out dust or debris affecting the analog sticks.

These tips are meant as a temporary fix for stick drift, and they might help improve your gaming experience for a while. However, for a long-term solution, you may need to disassemble the controller or consider professional repair.
