Minecraft has been a huge part of the gaming community since its inception, amassing legions of fans all across the world. Mojang has continued to improve the game and add new content each year, making it a favourite among newcomers and veterans alike. There isn't a day that passes by when users don't build a new world and share their Minecraft experience with their friends.

Mining is one of these experiences. One of the most crucial components of the game is mining, which should not be disregarded. Many players already know how to mine, but the majority do not know how to mine successfully. After all, one of the most important Minecraft rules is to never dig down straight. This tutorial will cover mining techniques and tactics that can help you locate gold, diamonds, and other valuable minerals rapidly.

What Do I Need For Mining?

Before you begin your mining adventure in Minecraft, you must first arrange a few items in order to mine properly and avoid running out of materials—or worse, dying in the process. Bringing some basic crafting resources, such as wood, coal, a crafting table, and a furnace, is always a good idea. Food, torches, weapons, tools, and armour are all vital items to have in your inventory at all times.

If you plan on remaining below for more than a day, a bed is a must-have. You should also bring at least one stack of sticks in case you need to turn these into tools. A clock is an optional tool to carry to swiftly discern whether it is day or night, as you will likely not be able to tell while you are far beneath. A clock will also assist you in determining when it is safe to go to the surface, so carry one with you.

If you want to mine obsidian, you may do it with a diamond pickaxe or by bringing a stack of empty buckets to collect lava and transform it into obsidian on the surface. It's also a good idea to write down the coordinates of your base before you leave, since this will help you find your way back.

You should never leave without a couple stacks of food and some weapons in your inventory. Food is necessary for resolving back health issues and preventing hunger. Starvation can kill you on hard mode, so keep that in mind and make sure you have enough of food. Protecting yourself from hostile hordes underground necessitates the use of weapons. A sword should always be your primary weapon underground since it has the fastest swing speed and the second highest damage output—second only to an axe. Other weapons, like as crossbows and tridents, aren't ideal for usage underground, therefore it's best not to bring them. You can utilise a shield in your offhand slot to protect yourself from direct assaults from hostile creatures, since it negates damage when used properly.

Finally, remember to carry your most important mining tool: the pickaxe. Your pickaxe should ideally be an iron pickaxe, as this is the most efficient pickaxe tier for mining. Bringing at least 2 to 3 iron pickaxes will spare you the hassle of having to make a new one if one breaks, which is especially crucial if you want to mine for more than a few days.

What Is The Most Effective Way To Mine?

Staircase Mining

As the name implies, the staircase mining method allows you to build a staircase that leads down to the bottom until you reach your target stratum. This strategy also allows you to dig deeper more rapidly, lowering the chance of falling from vast heights or into a lava pit below. The staircase method begins by excavating from the surface, producing a stair-like pattern as you dig, and finally locating a suitable mining stratum. Because you should never dig straight down, the best and most efficient approach to reach your target layer underground is to use the staircase technique, which also allows you to harvest common resources like iron and coal along the way.

To begin the staircase approach, you must first choose a suitable digging location. Because the surface of the overworld is frequently covered in dirt blocks, carry your shovel with you when digging to make things simpler. After that, start digging with your shovel once you've decided on a site.

To use the staircase approach, start by digging at least one block deep and two blocks ahead of you, then moving forward and repeating the process. Continue digging or mining your way until you reach your selected layer beneath, using the 45° digging angle to form a stair-like pattern behind you. In most cases, you can continue to do so while gathering any resources and minerals you come across.

Branch Mining

The branch mining approach helps novice players to mine more efficiently without having to take on a full cavern on their own. This is also true for veterans who want to set up a mining operation near their base. Branch mining is effective because it allows players to gather more resources more rapidly. However, because you will be mining a big region, this approach will use a lot of pickaxes, so carry a few additional tools with you. Make sure you're deep enough underground before you start branch mining, as this strategy works best in deeper levels.

To begin branch mining, you must first construct a two-block tall main tunnel in a specific direction. The tunnel's length will be determined by your preferences. Then, facing the left and right sides of the primary tunnel, dig two new tunnels. The length of each sub-tunnel will again be determined by your preferences. And repeat the last procedure, alternating every two blocks, to completely mine any resources you come across. This strategy, which builds "branch tunnels" from your main tunnel, is the ideal way to seek for diamonds if you're mining for them.

Quarry Mining

Quarry mining differs from branch mining in that it is a much more easy process. This approach will also require a large number of pickaxes, maybe even more than branch mining, so be prepared. Quarry mining, on the other hand, offers advantages in that it allows you to completely mine a region without missing any hidden resources. Simply dig around yourself until you form a room-like structure, then dig the room's floor one block deep at a time until you reach the lowest layer. After that, construct a ladder to return to the surface. This strategy will more likely reward you with more cobblestones than minerals, so if you need a lot of stones, this is the way to go.

These tips are very helpful. Thank you. Going to get mining ;)

The last 6 major updates to Minecraft have come in April 2019, December 2019, June 2020, June 2021, November 2021, and June 2022. Aside from 2020, there have been two major patches each year.

With that in mind, it stands to reason that the 1.20 Update will likely arrive towards the end of the year, in either November or December.
