How Can I Build a Game Using AI?

Hey everyone. Hope this is the right place to ask this! I'm a long-time gamer but a complete beginner when it comes to actually making games. Seriously, zero experience with coding or game engines yet, but I'm really eager to learn!

Lately, I've been seeing so much cool stuff about AI – things like ChatGPT, image generation, etc. – and it got my mind buzzing. It made me wonder: How could someone like me actually use AI technology to help build a game?

I know this is probably a massive question, and maybe a bit naive. When I think "AI in games," my mind jumps to things like:
  • Maybe smarter enemies or NPCs? (Though I guess that's always been a thing?)
  • Could AI help generate quests or story elements?
  • Maybe help create art assets or textures if you're not an artist (like me!)?
  • Could it help with level design ideas?
  • Is it even possible for a beginner to use these newer AI tools in something like Unity or Unreal Engine?
Honestly, I'm not even sure what's realistic or where to start. I see terms like "machine learning," "procedural generation," and "neural networks," and my eyes glaze over a bit!

So, I guess I'm asking for some guidance from you experienced folks:
  1. Is using modern AI (like generative AI) even feasible for a solo beginner project, or is it way too complex?
  2. What are some simple ways AI could be incorporated into a small game project for learning purposes?
  3. Are there specific tools, game engines, plugins, or tutorials you'd recommend for someone wanting to explore this?
  4. Where should I even begin learning the basics if this is my end goal? Should I focus on standard game dev first and worry about AI much later?
I'm really excited by the potential but also trying to keep my feet on the ground. Any advice, pointers, reality checks, or cool examples would be hugely appreciated!

Thanks so much for reading and for any help you can offer!
