GDC 2020 postponed due to coronavirus after several cancellations

GDC 2020 has been postponed due to the coronavirus after several cancellations.

After close consultation with our partners in the game development industry and community around the world, we’ve made the difficult decision to postpone the Game Developers Conference this March. We fully intend to host a GDC event later in the summer. We will be working with our partners to finalise the details and will share more information about our plans in the coming weeks.

The coronavirus has already affected numbers publishers, developers and activities like Nintendo Switch stocks, the Switch release of The Outer Worlds, the Taipei Game Show, Square Enix PAX East plans, Sony's PAX East plans, Kojima Productions at GDC, Overwatch League match, EA cancelling its GDC plans and Xbox GDC 2020 plans.

The International Game Developers Association confirmed its partnership with GameDev, in another statement.

World’s online event and fundraiser to alleviate the financial burdens on developers affected by the outbreak of COVID-19. In addition to providing financial relief, this event will supply education opportunities via free talks about important game development subjects. Attendees across the globe will be able to hone their expertise and knowledge.

The IGDA is also partnering with Take This, a trusted leader in mental health practice in the game industry, to develop new materials and standards of support and professionalism to ensure the success of developers. This partnership will provide trusted resources for sustainable development practices by improving human resource practices and leadership development across the game industry.

GDC 2020 was to take place March 16-20. We'll keep you posted on the new confirmed dates.

Not really a surprise honestly. Most companies and product manafactures are pulling out for fear of the corona virus.

They have my respect for holding out for so long, though it is wise to postpone, though I wonder if their attendees can make it to the summer event?

I am thinking that it is kind of out of the game this summer. A lot of events would be cancelled. Most likely the pre halloween weeks, things would be released or say even events would take place. Corona is definitely making things worst all over.
