Battlefield 5 had more active players over Christmas than Battlefield 2042, even though it was a much older game with no new content.

It seems that more players are interested in Battlefield 5 from 2018 than Battlefield 2042 which was just released over Christmas.
Battlefield 2042 largely surprised players upon its release and became the subject of controversy.
The sheer number of missing features, bugs, and other issues frustrated fans with the franchise’s return to modern times, and even appears to have sent some players back to the series’ older records.

The game struggles to keep players happy because it’s not that much fun because of the bugs and design choices, but also because of the lack of content.
There are many other games vying for players’ attention and many of them succeed by doing regular content updates.
GTA Online, Warzone, Halo Infinite, and a number of other titles managed to update themselves and open up new opportunities for players.
Unfortunately, the newly released data shows that Battlefield 2042 lags behind its competitors in this regard.

SteamCharts data (via MP1st) shows that more computer gamers were actively engaged in Battlefield 5 over Christmas than Battlefield 2042.
2042 had a more consistent player count over the years, while BF5 had a sharp rise and fall in players.
Battlefield 5 also managed to recruit over 25,000 players at its peak, while hitting around 19,000 by 2042.
Battlefield 2042 saw a 70% drop in player numbers two weeks after launch. And while the game still has tens of thousands of players, it’s unclear how long it can sustain its player base.
Fans are hopeful that Battlefield 2042 will find its base in a future update, similar to DICE’s Battlefront 2
EA has made plans to expand the Battlefield universe with three different teams led by Vince Zampela, founder of Respawn Entertainment.
