Seeing lots of new faces interested in game development lately, which is awesome! But let's be real, figuring out where to start learning can feel like navigating a maze blindfolded.

So, let's build a little treasure chest of knowledge!

What are your absolute favorite learning resources for aspiring game developers?

Think:
  • YouTube Channels (Tutorials, Theory, Devlogs)
  • Specific Online Courses (Udemy, Coursera, Skillshare, etc. - free or paid!)
  • Essential Books
  • Amazing Documentation Pages (Unity Learn, Unreal Docs, Godot Docs?)
  • Helpful Communities/Discords
  • Must-watch GDC Talks
  • Great Websites/Blogs

Whether it's for programming, art, design, audio, marketing, or the business side, share those gems that helped you level up!

Let's help each other get started and keep learning! Drop your recommendations below!

  • YouTube: Brackeys, TheCherno, Game Maker's Toolkit
  • Courses: Udemy, Coursera
  • Books: Game Programming Patterns, Art of Game Design
  • Docs: Unity Learn, Unreal Docs
  • Communities: r/gamedev, GameDev StackExchange, Discord
  • GDC Talks: “Art of Game Design”, “Emotional Experiences”
  • Websites: Gamasutra, TIGSource

Great topic! Personally, I learned a lot from Brackeys' videos (even though he stopped, his tutorials are still great).
The Unity Learn site is also really well designed for progressing step by step.
For animation, I loved Mix and Jam's videos, super inspiring!
Bonus: the GDC Talks on storytelling, always fascinating.
And for discussion, the Godot Engine Discord is very active and welcoming.

Great thread! Personally, I learned a ton from Brackeys on YouTube before it shut down—still gold for Unity beginners. For Unreal, the official docs + Virtus Learning Hub are super helpful. I also recommend the book Game Programming Patterns—a game changer for clean code. GDC talks are a must, especially ones on game feel and indie dev journeys. And for community, the Godot Discord has been incredibly welcoming and informative!
