The writer and social commentator Henry David Thoureau once declared that “most men lead lives of quiet desperation,” and although this an extremely bleak and disheartening statement, there’s undoubtedly some truth to it.

For far too many people, life is a long way from being the kind of magical adventure that it should ideally be. Instead, between the stresses and frustrations of everyday existence, and the disappointment that can come from a negative outlook on the world, life can often end up seeming downright dreary, dull, and miserable.

Actually be present and recognise the beauty and magic that’s already around you​

Most people find it magical to see young children interacting with the world, in part because children still see the world as a new, exciting, and magical place that’s full of mystery and wonder.

The thing is, it’s possible to enter in this more “child-like” way of experiencing the world, at any age. It just requires you to quieten your analytical mind a little bit, and to practice the skill of being present and actually noticing how amazing everything really is.

Disrupt your habits from time to time so that you don’t feel like you’re always running on a hamster wheel​

The term “follow your bliss” is kind of a cliche these days, but when it was coined by the famous mythologist and scholar Joseph Campbell, it was to get at the heart of some very meaningful ideas.

Ultimately, Campbell was trying to say that -- according to many mystical and religious traditions over the ages -- pursuing the feeling of “bliss” was seen as a way of living a life in alignment with something higher, and of experiencing greater depths of meaning.

So, if you want a more magical life, go and do things that deeper sense of “bliss” and meaning.
