Activision has put a spanner in their release cycle

For well over a decade now, we have seen new Call of Duty games being released through a rotation of developers. That rotation schedule has been working like a nice well oiled machine for all of that time but now, Activision has thrown a spanner into the works.

A report in Kotaku by Jason Schrier claims that whilst the latest Call of Duty game for the franchise was set to be Modern Warfare 4, the franchise's game for 2020, which was to be developed by Sledgehammer has been sent to the scrapheap and replaced by another Call of Duty: Black Ops title instead, developed by Treyarch. Such a change would represent a massive turn of events and the change was reportedly caused due to tensions between Slegdehammer and Raven, who were working together on the new game. Last year, Sledgehammer co-founders Michael Condrey and Glen Schofield both left the studio.

However, It’s not clear what the 2020 game was actually going to be. Previously, Sledgehammer bought Modern Warfare 3 to the table, and its first project where they were going it alone was the the not exactly loved Advanced Warfare. Back in 2017 however, they released Call of Duty: WWII which generated well over a $1 billion in revenue for Activision, and money always talks. As such, it's likely to theorize that a Call of Duty: WWII 2 may have been on the cards before the shakeup.

However it has happened, it is clear that this is a chaotic situation for Activision because now it means that Treyarch has to take over the reins and put out Black Ops 5 a full year early, upsetting the three year development cycle that has been the standard. Sledgehammer and Raven are now tasked with helping share the load on that game as one would expect with it being clear that Activision simply cannot miss a Call of Duty release date.
